The ‘Housing First for Sex Workers’ pilot in Leeds, which was funded through WY-FI’s Innovation and Co-production Fund and led by Basis Yorkshire, has been shortlisted for a Homeless Link Excellence Award.
Homeless Link received over 100 entries across 6 categories. The ‘Housing First for Sex Workers’ project is one of just six projects shortlisted in the ‘Innovation in Housing’ category. The ‘Innovation in Housing’ award acknowledges projects that have come up with a different or enhanced housing offer for people who have traditionally been seen as ‘hard to house’.
The ‘Housing First for Sex Workers’ pilot scheme in Leeds secured homes for a number of sex workers with extremely complex needs. Gemma Sciré, CEO of Basis Yorkshire, said: “Our non-judgemental, unconditional and flexible approach to working with sex workers is focused on reducing harm and providing choices for women. It made our service an ideal fit with Housing First.” As well as WY-FI, other partners involved in the pilot included: Barca Leeds and Foundation.
